Beneath My Writing
Can hope spring from tragedy? Yes! My life confirms this, even after the unfathomable passing of two of my three precious children.
My husband and I learned to believe in possibilities over limitations when two of our children were born with disabilities after suffering strokes in the womb. We wrapped our lives around making sure that Laura and Christopher, our oldest and youngest, lived beyond their limitations and that our middle son, Ben, flourished as well.
Many adaptations were made to our lifestyle allowing adventures as a family. We enjoyed camping, travel, hiking, entertaining, and more, even with the two kids having limited mobility due to cerebral palsy. Laura was confined to a wheelchair without speech, and Christopher had mild autism and both were legally blind. Yes, there were difficulties and relentless demands. Yet, as we embraced these and pursued possibilities, we experienced unexpected joy through witnessing the remarkably positive!
Heartbreakingly, within one year of each other and without warning, Laura and Christopher both died from medical issues unrelated to their disabilities. Naturally, our family reeled with the grief wrought from these tragedies. Through time and much grace from God, we were able to bring meaning to their deaths by funneling our energy into supporting other families of children with special needs and those who are grieving.
Now, in this otherwise retired season of my life, I am a writer. Like us all, my life’s tapestry is made up of many passages. The enlightenment of parenting and my grief journey are only elements of my story. My full life has left me with a passion for sharing stories about conquering life’s challenges, the importance of effective communication, fulfilling relationships, the enjoyment of life, and the wonders of faith.
It is my desire that my writing will provide support for your journey, whether you’re immersed in special needs parenting, simply embracing life and personal growth, or struggling with deep grief. I invite you to be one of my readers as we celebrate adventures and conquer challenges with honesty, humor, and hope!

We often find ourselves butting up against ineffective learned behaviors that hinder our success and relationships. “Hope for Change” removes some of the mystery behind why our best efforts sometimes result in setbacks versus progress.
“The Rise and Fall of My Heart” is the heroic journey of Laura. Though she didn’t walk or talk, she approached life as if she had no limitations whatsoever! From her wheelchair, by example, she taught those around her what truly matters in life.
“What Did You Say?” takes a refreshingly honest look at dead-end communications and presents attainable solutions. Underlying needs or agendas are introduced as culprits for some of our ineffective bantering, prompting helpful introspection, and growth.
“Where’d Everybody Go?” is a candid portrayal of mourning the deaths of two of the author’s three children. Her testimony of emotional healing and spiritual assuredness brings great solace to the reader. A grieving parent or someone touched by that grief will be able to understand, explore, and process their own journey with a bit more ease.
